Supreme Court Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist will not be returning to the bench today as originally planned.
The 80 year-old Chief Justice said in a statement that the delay was at the advice of his doctors.
Rehnquist is currently undergoing treatment for thyroid cancer.
If Rehnquist's illness become more acute there could be calls, especially from liberal democrats, for the long time veteran of the Court to retire. If Bush wins, I am fairly certain that Rehnquist will consider it. If Kerry wins, he will stay just to keep the Court intact.
