Headlines - July 3, 2012

While Congress is on vacation - official - you would hope the news would be full of picnics, parades and general goodwill.  In this election year you can forget about most of that. So, here are a few tidbits to hopefully keep you interested as the campaigns shift into nasty gear for a long hot summer.

Last week, the was a bit of an uproar over President Obama spending the 4th of July in Paris for a fundraiser. The Obama campaign is planning a Paris fundraiser on the Fourth, but the President will remain in Washington.  Maybe he realized it would be an insult to the country to be in Europe of Independence Day or maybe it was never planned that way.

Obama will travel to Europe for a campaign swing latrer this month and in August.  Obama supporter George Clooney will be hosting a campaign gala in Geneva to help boost the campaign coffers.

Maybe someone should tell the campaign and Clooney that Europeans cannot vote in an American election.

The June jobs report may bring more bad news to a campaign issue destined to determine the election. The latest unemployment rate will be released near the end of the week.

The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) report should manufacturing is beginning to contract with factory activity decline to 49.7 percent. Factory activity is one of the key indicators on the ehalth of the economy.  If the rate decline to 47 percent or lower, it generally indicates recession.

The White House and Obama campaign are preparing for a poor jobs report with new jobs, according to experts, only reaching 100,000.  This number will have negligible affect on the unemployment rate.

The primary race in New York's 15th Congressional District may not be over. Although incumbent Charles Rangel looking for his 22nd term in Congress, his opponent is claiming vote fraud and voter suppression.

New York State Sen. Adrian Espaillat is re-filing a court petition citing a number of problems with last week's primary.

According to Espaillat supporters voters were pushed away, asked for IDs - not a requirement in New York - and Spanish speakers were not allowed to use machines.  One supporter claimed there was a concerted effort to "steal" the election.

"Over 70 electoral districts came in at zero on election night.  Imagine this, 70 election districts came in at zero on election night, with no results whatsoever," said Espaillat. "That is highly irregular."

The Department of Justice has been asked to investigated.  This, however, sounds like normal Democrat politics in New York.
