What's Wrong With the Republicans? - A Check This Out Extra

What is wrong with the Republicans? Why are they acting like the minority party in the Senate? Why do some Senators seem like Neville Chamberlain appeasing the Democrats? The Republicans hold the House of Representative, they hold the Senate, and they hold the White House. What more do they want? Maybe they want to be liked by the Democrats. WHY?

Yesterday marked the fourth anniversary of the appointment of Texas Supreme Court Justice Priscilla Owen to the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals. Fourth anniversary!!! A judicial nominee should not be celebrating anniversaries of their appointment, they should be celebrating a successful life on the bench. The Republicans have allowed the Democrats to shape the worthiness of a nominee. They are allowing Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) to concoct a fishing expedition at the Department of State on the nomination of John Bolton.

The Republicans are allowing this. Each day you hear the Democrat PR machine take hold of the judicial nominee issue by "offering" compromises. "We'll vote on one, if you remove 3." No way. The Democrats have seized the PR machine and with it the support of the liberal media. The media and their liberal friends paint a possible rules change in the Senate as a "nuclear option." There's nothing nuclear about it. It is in keeping with the Constitution that allows the Senate to "advise and CONSENT" to the president's nominees. It does not say "block and filibuster" anyone you dislike.

Yesterday the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee Arlen Spector (R-PA) said it was "both parties fault." No senator, it is not. It is your fault for not having the strength to push through the nominees. It is the Committee's fault by allowing Democrats to control the agenda. The Senate Judiciary Committee is not doing its job. This column warned you about Spector. He is not a team player. Is he really a Republican?

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) has been waiting for months to propose Senate rule changes to ban filibusters for judicial nominees. The rule would only ban filibuster for judicial nominees. The Democrats could continue to filibuster other nominees and any bill they like. Frist's argument is the nominees deserve an "up or down" vote. So, why hasn't Frist moved forward. He certainly has the votes. Even if enough Republican traitors voted against the rule change to make it a tie, the Vice President will vote in favor of the rule change. So why is Frist waiting? This rule change should have been enacted in January not before summer break.

The Republicans need to seize the PR machine. They need to show that a majority party is the majority party. If the Democrats follow through on their threat to block and filibuster most Senate business, the Republicans should seize the issue saying to the American voters, "See, the Democrats are holding up your Social Security, Medicare, and other federal payments."

The Democrats are in the minority. They have no plan, no solution, and will not compromise. They are the problem.

Senate Republicans are acting like the minority party. They need to take strong stands on the issues, change the Senate rules, and look like they are in charge of the agenda.
