Friday Update - 5.6.05 - A Promise From Reid??

Good afternoon . . .

Senate Minority Leaders Harry Reid (D-NV) says he does not intend to filibuster judicial nominees. Well, not really. Reid says he will advise Democrats not to filibuster Supreme Court nominees.

Reid fully supports a filibuster on any nominee for appellate courts nominated by President Bush.

Since Reid has no real control over the other Senate Democrats, especially Byrd and Kennedy, any pledge to not filibuster is simply not to be believed.

One of the provisions in the $82 billion supplemental appropriation for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan passed by the House Thursday is a requirement that the states ensure that driver's licenses were only issued to US citizens or legal immigrants.

The Real ID provision is expected to discourage illegal immigration and make it harder for terrorists to get documents to evade security. Opponents of the bill say it is the first step to a national ID card. Although it is not supposed to be used for identification, isn't a social security card a kind of national ID?

Critics including some state officials say that it will be an addition burden on state budgets and will not help security.

The House passed measure will move to the Senate next week.
