The Briefing - 1.3.05

UPDATE: The 109th Congress begins tomorrow. While there were hopes of new bi-partisan action, recent statements by Senate Minroty Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) it will be business as usual. Pelosi has said she will continue to block legislation that is too conservative. Reid has said that he wants more Democrats on commitees and will continue to obstruct Presidential nominees to the Federal Bench.

The Tsunami has dominated the news, local and national, and there is very little other news being reported. I find it troubling that local stations, especially in Chicago, are promoting donations to UNICEF for disaster relief. UNICEF is a unit of the United Nations and based on previous activity in the UN, it is unlikely that much if any of the donations will reach Asia.

Speaking of the UN. While the UN continues to bash President Bush as "stingy" and interfering with UN efforts, Secretary General Kofi Annan continued his skiing trip for three days before returning to New York to "lead" relief efforts.

If you are inclined to give to disaster relief do it through the Red Cross or other responsible charity. Also be lerry of any website that requests donations. Check them carefully. There are hundreds of website soliciting donations and most are scams.

Speaking of scams, we begin the New Year without any report on the investigation into Rathergate. It was originally promised for "shortly" after the election. The elections was 60 days ago.

Former Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm died over the weekend. Ms Chisholm championed minority rights and was one of the founders of the Congressional Black Caucus.

While a staunch Democrat Chisholm would often vote against members of her party and caucus to demonstrate independence and a sense of what is right. Chisholm often voted against Democrat far left wing Congressman John Conyers on a variety of issues.

Chisholm was a leader and activist. She was 80.

Although the election has been over for two months, many liberals will not let it die. A liberal political action group, the Committee to Re-Defeat the President will be holding protests this week before Congress meets Thursday to count the electoral votes.

The groups website claims that the results of four states, including Ohio, will be challenged and for the House to decide the election. Well, that's fine. I guess this group forgot that Republicans control the House. So, Bush wins . . . AGAIN!!!!
