Friday Update - Dean Continues to Rant - 6.3.05

Good afternoon . .

DNC Chairman is a Republican dream come true. That's right a Republican dream.

As Dean makes his way across the country, the fail presidential nominee pictures Republicans as negative as he can. He calls Republicans liars, evil, and losers in an attempt to win back the Congress, the White House, and as many statehouses as he can. Well, he is failing.

A recent article says Democrat contributors are "sitting on their wallets" because of the continuing rant by Dean. His rhetoric and tone have reached the levels of the Iowa "screech." Some Democrats, including the governor of Arizona, will not meet with him and distance themselves from his rhetoric. And yet he continues.

Speaking at the liberal Campaign for America's Future convention, Dean said that Republicans are about suppressing the votes of minority groups. "Two voting machines if you live in a black district, 10 voting machines if you live in a white district," Dean said in a C-SPAN televised speech.

Later in his signature rant he claimed that Republicans "have never made an honest living in their lives." I guess Dean forgot that his "boy" Bill Clinton lived in government housing until he left the presidency. Talking about not making an honest living.

Republican National Committee spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt responded in a statement.

"Howard Dean's diatribe ... illustrates that the Democratic Party not only lacks leadership but is overflowing with anger," Schmitt said. "His comment that a lot of Republicans have never made an honest living in their lives makes it clear that Dean's priority is to generate mudslinging headlines rather than engage in substantive debate."

Republicans may not be the only problem for Dean and the Democrats. The newly elected mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villaraigosa, also attended the left wing confab in Washington and noticed that the Democrats and their liberal friends do not reflect the diversity they claim to embrace.

"Look at this room today," he told a largely white crowd at a rally for the liberal group Campaign for America's Future. "You don't see the kind of diversity that we need to build a strong movement in America."

So, the party that claims to embrace all Americans and all races and ethnic groups, does not. What will Jesse Jackson say about that?

The trial to determine whether voter fraud and election official errors affected the outcome of the Washington gubernatorial race in last November's election is over. Attorneys for the Democrats rested their case today.

The Democrats submitted several depositions and documents statewide to prove that mistakes happen in every county not just King County.

GOP attorneys plan to examine rebuttal witnesses later today followed by closing arguments.

Chelan County Superior Court Judge John Bridges said Thursday he plans to rule Monday whether to nullify the election. Both side say they will appeal any decision made by Judge Bridges. This means it is not yet over and the "fat lady' is still in the building.

The child abuse scandals in the Catholic Church continue to find news cases and new settlements.

The Covington (KY) Catholic Diocese has agreed to set up a $120 million dollar fund to compensate victims of child-molesting priests and other employees.

The settlement, which is subject to approval by a Kentucky judge, would bring to the end a class-action suit by more than 100 alleged victims. The group accuses the diocese of a 50-year cover-up of sexual abuse by priests and others.

"After personally meeting with more than 70 victims, I am painfully aware that no amount of money can compensate for the harm these victims suffered as innocent children," Covington Bishop Roger Foys said in a statement. "Nevertheless, I pray that this settlement will bring some measure of peace and healing to victims and their loved ones."

If approved by the court, it will be the nation's largest settlement in a scandal that has challenged the church for many years.

The Covington Diocese is part of the larger Cincinnati Archdiocese. There was no comment from the Cincinnati Archdiocese or the archbishop.

In a related story, the Philadelphia Archdiocese defrocked two priests this week.

One defrocked priest is Rev. Edward DePaoli who was convicted in 1986 of child pornography. DePaoli was convicted of possession of pornographic materials g=featuring young boys. He received a suspended sentence, received counseling, and placed on restricted ministry.

he was later dismissed for continuing to say Mass and performing other public duties in 2002. The archdiocese referred the case to the Vatican who removed him from the priesthood.

Retired Msgr. Philip Dowling was permanently barred from ministry. Dowling admitted that he had repeatedly fondled a young girl saying he was "very sorry for the inappropriate acts and touches."

Dowling was not defrocked but given a life of "prayer and penance."

The other priest to be defrocked is Rev. Martin Satchell. He was dismissed from his post over "a credible allegation of misconduct involving a minor." Satchell was defrocked at his own request.
