Breaking News -Pope John Paul II Dies at 84

After a reign of 26 years, Pope John Paul II has died in his apartment in Vatican City a 2:37 Eastern time. He was 84.

His death was caused by complications from Parkinsons disease and heart and kidney failure.

A charismatic and energetic leader, John Paul II led the Church through good times and bad. His conservative policies kept the Church on course and close to its original mission. His successor will face a Church that is losing members in Europe and has a shortage of priests worldwide. While it is unlikely that a successor will change doctrine on abortion, homosexuality, it could embrace either married men or women as priests.

Following nine days of mourning and Masses, Cardinals from all over the world will convene in Vatican City to elect a new Pope. This Conclave will have some differences, but will be a mysterious and spiritual as any Conclave. The man who eventually stands at the balcony overlooking St. Peter's Square will lead over 1 billion Catholics into an uncertain future.

More as events warrant.
