Morning Briefing - 2.1.05

Good morning . . .

The obstructionists are back.

Senate Democrats are dragging their feet on the nomination of Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General and have vowed to continue to fight Bush judicial nominees.

The board of directors of The Latino Coalition do not understand the reason for the delay for a nominee with overwhelming support in the latino community.

In a press release TLC says, "The time for partisan posturing is over." The press release urges "quick and decisive" Senate confirmation.

TLC President Roberto Desposada blames "partisan politics" for the Democrats stalling. "This attitude cost Democrats dearly in the last election, and unless they wake up, it can only get worse," Deposada added.

Current and future judicial nominees will be subject to the same stalling and obstruction by Senate Democrats.

Taking a page from Tom Daschle's failed strategy, Senator Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said, "If they bring back the same judges, we're going to do the same thing."

This attitude was costly to the Democrats, especially Daschle, in the last election and could be more devastating on the 2006 mid-term election. Obviously, the Democrats did not learn their lesson.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) has warned Democrats that there could be a change in the Senate rules that will allow filibusters be ended by a simple majority vote instead of the 60 votes now needed.

Meanwhile, Reid and House Minority Leaders Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) are continuing their "pre-buttal" on the President's State of the Union Address.
